When I picked this up I didn’t know what I would be presented with, but the word soul really intrigued me. What I got was really quite simply brilliant. An album that refuses to be pigeon-holed, I attempted to fit it to some sort of musical category salsa, latin, soul, even maybe hip hop but none fitted.

This Nu Yorican Soul project brings together two of New York’s hottest producers and contains every possible beat you can think of or even care about. With guest artists like Roy Ayers, Jocelyn Brown and Jazzy Jeff there are high expectations, and this album does not disappoint. The killer cuts are far too numerous to talk about so I will restrict myself to the straight up stone cold killers which are hip hop turntable work outs ‘Runaway’ by Jazzy Jeff and both of the Royer Ayers tracks which are brilliant and worth your full attention. My personal favourite was ‘Runaway’, the vocal has a soulful quality to it and has salsa diva India giving real meaning to the words. Jazzy Jeff is a well established producer with a huge amount of talent and on ‘Jazzy Jeff’s Theme’, the man gives a three minute turntable performance. This album is destines to be a nineties classic.(7)
