A capella teams at ICCAs
On Sunday 22nd February, three of Imperial’s a capella groups performed in the UK Championship quarterfinals, one of them qualifying for the semifinals. In first place, with 382 points was Nth Harmonic with their shiny silver outfits; in second place, with 378 points was the Houghtones from LSE; and, in third place with 339 points was The Scopes, who also received an award for outstanding arrangement.
The quarterfinals consisted of 9 teams, all performing for 10 minutes in front of professional judges. Everything in the show was fantastic, and the hard work every singer had put in showed through each movement and note hit. Going to the show for my friend performing in Houghtones, I was not expecting to find any Imperial teams, let alone find some of my friends there – this was a pleasant surprise.
The outfits, the style, and the dance by Nth Harmonic lit up the room, creating a beat and a sensation of being engulfed in the dance floor, so much so I found myself swaying and tapping my foot with the music.
As for the Scopes, they had incredible soloists, emotion, and passion that guide you through each tone and melody.
And we can’t forget about the Imperielles, whose pop songs were very catchy, and whose insane dance moves and perfectly synchronised.

About the win
Adam Young, a tenor in Nth Harmonic said: “Honestly, we weren’t too bothered by the result but rather we were very thankful we got the chance to perform together and have fun. Also massive thanks to Charlie and Oli, our amazing musical directors.” And as the team themselves put it, “We’ve had the absolute best time working on this year’s set. Preparing for competition always brings us together like nothing else, it’s so much fun to see it all come together. Getting this result made it extra special but we’re just thrilled we get to perform the set again on the 7th of March! We’re about to DEVOUR... one more time!”
It’s the first time that they have won quarterfinals, and their second time getting to the semifinals – a new record that the team is proud of.
Nth Harmonic, the Scopes, and Imperielles are all evidence that being STEM oriented or put into a STEM-oriented environment does not mean you lack creativity or talent in art – far from it!
As the semifinals await Nth Harmonic, we wish them the best of luck!
