BUCS Breakdown
What you need to know about University sports
Every Wednesday, you have likely noticed some of your peers leaving lectures early donning their tracksuits with gear in hand. Your free afternoon in the middle of the week where you can play catch up aren’t because the university is feeling gracious; its all about BUCS
What is BUCS?
BUCS stands for British Universities & Colleges Sport. It is the national governing body for competitive sports at Universities. It coordinates and facilitates the sporting competition between over 160 Universities for 55 sports. BUCS is the big time. Whilst we also compete in LUSL (London Universities Sports Leagues), that is far more casual whereas BUCS is where the serious competition occurs.
Wednesdays are the most important day of the week: BUCS Wednesday. Across the country this afternoon is freed up to allow students to travel and play against other universities to gain points and move up in the league table or win knockout matches.
Structure
At the heart of BUCS is the league system. University teams are organised into different conferences based on geographical location: Northern, Midlands, Western, South Eastern, and Scottish. Within these conferences, teams compete in leagues organised into different divisions ranging from Premier level down to lower divisions depending on the sport. Throughout the year, teams will play regular fixtures against each other within their league to gain points based on match results. At the end of it all, their points determine their league position potentially leading to promotion or relegation between tiers. Alongside this there are also knockout competitions where teams compete in an elimination format, with the majority reaching their climax on BUCS Big Wednesday where the national knockout finals take place. Here teams compete for the National Championship, Trophy or Vase. There is also a regional knockout structure for sports within each conference, culminating on conference finals day where teams compete to win the Conference Cup.
BUCS is essentially Nationwide University sports league, with Wednesday afternoons reserved for fixtures leading into Wednesday Sports Night.
