2024 US Election: Celebrity endorsement impacts

Celebrity endorsements have long played an influential role in the US elections, and this year’s iteration is no exception. This year, many celebrities have taken to social media to proudly share their vote and encourage their followers to participate.

A notable endorsement came from singer Taylor Swift on Instagram, who expressed her support for Vice President Kamala Harris after the second presidential debate. Mrs Swift made a post encouraging her 283 million followers to register to vote, which led to 340,000 visits to Vote.gov (the Federal voting registration website) within 24 hours. Her endorsement disproportionately increased electoral engagement among young voters – an underrepresented group. By bringing pop culture into this election, Mrs Swift helped the Democratic Party reach a younger audience, amplifying its message to the masses. Her support also encouraged other celebrities to voice their political views.

The Democrats are not alone in leveraging these endorsements. Former Republican president Donald Trump has garnered support from high-profile figures like that of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has voiced his agenda through social media and attendance at Mr Trump’s rallies. His $75 billion donation to American PAC (the Trump-supporting political action campaign he started) highlights how celebrities are not just expressing voter support but are also directly involved in campaigns. This financial backing blurs the lines regarding the extent of celebrity involvement in modern elections, potentially skewing the democratic process. Moreover, this reliance prompts questions about the authenticity of political messages and the celebrities’ true motivations.

The impact of celebrity endorsements on this election is undeniable. Both Trump and Harris know that there are one of the best ways to garner support for their party in a country as diverse as the US. The vocal and financial backing not only amplify campaign messages but also mobilise voter turnout, disproportionately among certain demographics. The intersection of celebrity culture and politics highlights the evolving nature of modern elections, where the influence of celebrity figures can undermine the democratic process.
