Golden Globes 2026

One Battle After Another and Adolescence sweep the stage for the 83rd Golden Globe Awards

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards, held January 11th at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, kicked off this year’s awards season. Hosted for the second year by comedian Nikki Glaser, the CBS broadcast leaned into sharp humor without tipping into controversy. According to last Tuesday’s (January 13th) episode of Howard Stern’s radio show, she said that she had decided to sidestep overt political barbs in her monologue that didn’t fit the tone of the night.

Overall, it seemed like this year’s ceremony managed to succeed in spreading a range of recognition across film and television but lacked the viral chaos of earlier eras, with television audience numbers dipping compared to 2025. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another was the evening’s most-awarded film, taking home four Golden Globes: including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Meanwhile, Hamnet claimed Best Motion Picture – Drama, with Jessie Buckley winning Best Actress in a Drama for her transformative performance. Netflix’s Adolescence emerged as the TV powerhouse  of  the  night, sweeping four wins including Best Limited Series. The Pitt and The Studio also scored top awards in drama and musical/comedy categories respectively. Meanwhile, there were some questionable moments, such as surprise stage appearances and odd interludes (like a mixed-genre cameo from UFC fighters). Viewers on social media praised the night’s diversity of winners but were divided over its unpredictable pacing and unconventional performances.

This year’s Globes introduced a Best Podcast category, won by Good Hang with Amy Poehler, acknowledging the medium’s growing cultural impact. As awards season continues, the ripple effects of the Golden Globes, in momentum and narrative framing, will be felt in upcoming Critics Choice, SAG, BAFTA, and Academy Awards races. Whether One Battle After Another and Hamnet maintain their hold on nominations remains to be seen, but this year’s Globes have already helped define a richly competitive season.
