Medical Schools across the UK form singular football team

Introducing the National Medical School Football Club, founded by Ollie Newbould.

For the first time ever in British medical history, a national football team uniting medical students from across the UK has been created. Founded as the National Medical School Football Club (NMSFC), by Ollie Newbould, a fifth-year medical student from Imperial College London, the initiative brings the best footballers from more than 20 medical schools together. The club aims to build a lasting legacy that connects future doctors far beyond the pitch.

The idea for NMSFC was born from Ollie’s ambition to unite an otherwise disconnected set of students scattered across the country through sport, under one name. Within months, his project gained momentum, with the backing of Imperial, UCL, and more. Interest has spread online within social media, with @medschools_fc drawing support from other pages with a cumulative follower reach of over 2.7 million. Ollie explained, “This is about more than football. We’re building a national community of future doctors, showcasing the talent and discipline of medical students while forming friendships and professional networks that will last throughout our careers.” In a profession often marked by long hours and high pressure, the club offers a sense of camaraderie and shared identity. It bridges traditional rivalries between universities, discarding previously established varsities.

With momentum and support growing, the NMSFC is preparing for a calendar of high-profile fixtures that promise challenge and prestige. The team will face opponents steeped in history, with exhibitions against teams including the British Army, Royal Navy, Oxford Blues, and Great British Medics, highlighting both the competitive nature and ambition of the project.

For the players, many of whom balance medical studies with training and travel, these games offer a rare chance to represent not just their universities, but their profession. “It’s an amazing chance for medical schools from all corners of the UK to come together for the first time,” says Ollie, “We’re proud to represent medicine in a way that celebrates teamwork and unity.”

Plans are also coming together to establish a women’s team as part of the National Medical Schools name. The aim is to provide equal opportunities for young women seeking to represent their profession on a national stage. As support continues to grow, the team hopes to expand its fixture list, attract sponsorship, and strengthen partnerships across universities.

The National Medical Schools Football Club is the UK’s first national team bringing together medical students through football. Beyond the games, it offers students a chance to build connections, develop teamwork, and enjoy sport alongside their studies. For the next generation of doctors, it provides a new way to connect with peers from across the country while pursuing their shared passion for football.
