Imperial half-heartedly hangs Pride flag for LGBTQ+ History Month
Imperial College has decided to “half-heartedly” hang up a Pride flag in a disused corner of the Sherfield building because of a commitment to “remain impartial” following political tensions, according to people familiar with the matter.
The College did not plan any official events for LGBTQ+ History Month for the first time in over a decade.
LGBTQ+ History Month is celebrated in the UK between 1st and 28th February. However, according to leaked documents seen by NegaFelix the University has decided not to spend or commit to any considerable events due to a lack of funds, as well as fears that any sustained displays of support for the LGBTQ+ community would result in political backlash from “British people with ‘valid concerns,’ the Americans who really want to fund our newest library, and the influx of Gulf Arabs, who we would of course not want to offend or cause tensions within our Imperial Communities. After all, they pay for our oil research.”
The LGBTQ+ community at Imperial has been greatly disappointed by the news. “At least it’s not something stupid like ‘queer’ Badminton or a ‘queer’ ecology walk,” said one irate member of IQ who did not wish to be named. “Like at least it’s just a flag and not a random event they tried to pinkwash. And I suppose it’s good Imperial has stopped trying to pinkwash itself.”
Members of the Union declined to comment as they were “pre-occupied” hosting the fifth “Liberation, Activation, and Communitisation Pre-Annual General Forum Meeting, Part 1: Actions we aim to commit for the Academic Year 2028-29.” The event was by all accounts a “resounding success” according to unnamed Union staff, given that more than three people attended.
