Lectures likely to be online next term

Alice Gast has revealed that Imperial will embrace the technological inovations that have been prompted by the coronavirus lockdown in her annual President’s Address.

Speaking at the event, Gast laid out the three major challenges that the College faced and her four point plan for the future. Most notably she celebrated the inovation that was developed to continue teaching this year and discussed how by “integrating the innovations we have made with the best of our traditional modes of education” the College would “enrich the educational experience for our students”.

Current information on the Imperial College website, aimed at both offer holders and current students has promised a blend of traditional and digital teaching saying that “in general, large lectures may be delivered online where necessary, while smaller tutorials/seminars and practical learning opportunities will be hosted on our campuses”.

Felix has heard, however, that the use of online lectures may be more extensive than this.

Members of the Maths faculty have allegedly already been celebrating the reduction in workload that will accompany online learning as they intend to reuse many of the videos that have been produced this year. This suggests that in person lectures will be limited. This has provoked anger in students in the Department with one JMC student telling Felix that “If they want to reuse their materials then they are welcome to reuse my fees from this year next year.”

Imperial has been contacted for comment.
