MathSoc’s “Take me Out” reviewed
One match was made in the second edition of the dating game.
If you’re looking for love, here is the opportunity,” reads the advert for Imperial Mathematics Society’s “Take Me Out” event, a dating game which took place on Tuesday 13th January.
It is MathSoc’s second edition of the event, after a successful first run in 2024. Male presenters face a panel of eight women whom they must convince of their suitability for a date. The panellists are each provided with a balloon, which they can pop at any time to indicate their disinterest.
A match is made if a balloon remains by the end of the presentation, which consists of two phases: an introduction based on a slide deck assembled by the presenter’s friends, and an unrehearsed karaoke.
These slide decks, which the presenters discovered at the same time as the audience, usually consisted of series of malicious puns and double-entendres alongside unflattering footage of the contestant.
One contestant, who later complained that the slides did not do him justice, discovered that his favourite colours are “pink or brown.”
Another, who had to contend with Reform UK-branded slides, delighted the audience with pictures of a Super Mario World cosplay (from the waist down only) and a footage of FiveSixEight security staff escorting him off the premises.
Some contenders left nothing to luck – one arrived in a suit with a rose between his teeth, and another ended his presentation with an impressive performance of “Careless Whisper” on the saxophone. Forty push-ups later, that lucky contender was granted the only date of the night. But Euterpe has her favourites, and many a balloon popped during another contender’s rendition of “Stacey’s Mom”.
This correspondent’s opinion, which was shared by multiple audience members, is that the panel was too prompt in popping their balloons for a few promising candidates, depriving them of the chance to prove their worth, and the audience of a good laugh.
If you’re disappointed to have missed out on this wild night, the Imperial and LSE Raising and Giving societies have announced their own on-campus “Take me Out”, planned for February 13th, and featuring a dedicated “LGBTQ+ round”.
