University Challenge: Quarterfinal setback for Imperial as Christ’s College clinches win

Imperial’s University Challenge team faced a setback as they narrowly lost their quarter-final match 160–180 against Christ’s College, Cambridge, following an “absolutely phenomenal” match against Wadham College, Oxford.

Imperial performed well, taking an early lead which they held for the points in the majority of the match.

However, their opponents began catching up and a last minute wrong answer led to Christ’s College taking the bonus points, edging them just 20 points ahead by the end of the round.

The team still has a chance to compete as they earned the highest number of points in the previous round: they now need to win two qualifying matches for a chance at the semi-final.

Host Amol Rajan called the bout a “ludicrously tight game” and described Christ’s performance as “absolutely astonishing.”

“A lot of people at home weren’t expecting it,” he told Christ’s College, noting their comeback had been achieved “brilliantly.”
