Imperial College's President-designate has been announced as Hugh Brady, the current Vice-Chancellor of University of Bristol (UoB). Professor Brady will take over from the current President, Alice Gast, on 1st August 2022.
Professor Brady has a wealth of experience in Higher Education management, having previously been President of University College Dublin (UCD) and Vice-Chancellor of University of Bristol.
Brady began his career as a medic, specialising in diabetic kidney disease and cultivating an impressive reputation at Harvard University in the USA, before returning to UCD to undertake progressively senior positions in the medicine faculty, before being made the university's president in 2004.
Hugh is something of an HE leadership powerhouse. As a Professor of Medicine at UCD he was involved in the development and running of multiple research facilities and institutes, expanding UCD's cooperative network amongst other HE providers. He became UCD's youngest ever President at just 44, immediately getting to work on UCD's global standing, increasing the proportion of international students attending the university and improving its outreach, including establishing the Beijing-Dublin International College in Beijing, in partnership with Beijing University of Technology.
At UoB Brady's leadership led to the development of the Vision and Strategy for the University, a reassessment of the university's standing "for the 21st century".
More from Felix on Professor Brady soon...
