Imperial College Operatic Society

Since October ICOS has been working towards five performances that will last less than two and a half hours each. The result of these many hundreds of hours of rehearsal will be next week’s run of "Sweet Charity".

So you’ve seen the posters and the full page adverts in Felix (the ones featuring a less than fully dressed woman), but you don’t know what it is? "Sweet Charity" is a musical play, a play featuring a lot of singing and dancing, just like most of the shows in the West End.

The show is set in 1966 New York around the loves and losses of Charity Hope Valentine, a dance hall hostess. Love is her religion, she truly believes "Without love, life has no purpose" and she seems to spend her life moving from guy to guy in the desperate hope of finding somebody permanent. She does eventually find a guy who appears to be just what she is looking for, but the course of true love never runs smooth.

This plot is, as you would expect of a musical, just a way of linking one song to the next. This is a really lively show, with some great songs which whether you recognise them or not you are sure to enjoy.

There will be performances from Tuesday 4th February to Saturday 8th February at 7.30pm in the Union Concert Hall. Tickets are just Ł4 for students and other concessions and Ł6 for all others, and available from the Union Office, on the door or from Gareth Brown either in person or by e-mail at g.m.brown@ic.ac.uk

On the other hand, if you are interested in joining ICOS we start rehearsals for our Easter show on Tuesday 11th February at 7.30pm. You are very welcome, especially if you are male (don’t let this discourage you if you aren’t), as even with Imperial’s 75% male population, men are outnumbered. This show will be a collection of songs from a variety of musicals, and will be performed just before the Easter Vacation, and should be fun.

Imperial security team trials body cameras

Imperial Community Safety and Security (CSS) officers have started a four-week trial of wearing Body-Worn Cameras (BWC) on patrol duty since Wednesday 20th August.  According to Imperial’s BWC code of practice, the policy aims at enhancing on-campus “safety and wellbeing” as well as protecting security staff from inaccurate allegations.
