The Imperial and SOAS teams tying early in the game. BBC

Imperial College’s University Challenge team qualified for the second round of the hit quiz competition with a resounding victory of 220-115 against the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). The team had “a hell of a performance” according to host Amol Rajan, as they now proceed further into the competition.

Although SOAS developed an early lead of 35-10 in the starter round, Imperial’s team quickly caught up, leading the competition by the end of the picture round, following a question on the production graphs of various energy sources. By the music round Imperial had a lead of 95-50, which grew to 175-50, 22 minutes into the programme.

Despite SOAS’s attempts to catch up, managing to claw 115 points by the end of the match, Imperial remained on top, finishing with an impressive 220 points.

"In honour of" their last bonus round which allowed Imperial to remain in the competition, the team brought a jar of kimchi nestled within the legs of their penguin mascot.
